US set to extend protected status for 100,000 Ukrainians, CNN reports

·

The United States is expected to extend Temporary Protected Status for about 100,000 Ukrainians beyond its expiry date of 19 October, the Kyiv Independent reports, citing CNN and a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson.

The spokesperson said a formal announcement would come in due course but that people covered by the scheme could safely remain. The status lets Ukrainians live and work legally in the US and enrol in education. It was first granted in March 2022, shortly after Russia's full-scale invasion, and last renewed in January 2025.

CNN also reported extensions for Sudan, El Salvador and Lebanon. The Trump administration has ended the status for people from 13 countries, including Afghanistan, Haiti and Syria, since March 2025. The move comes amid strained relations between Kyiv and Washington over sanctions relief for Russia.
