Health officials in Washington state announced on Sunday that a resident who was taken to hospital seriously ill with bird flu has died, The Guardian reported. The person, who had underlying health conditions and has not been named, caught the virus at a Yakima County dairy farm where cattle were infected.
According to the Associated Press, it is the first US death from bird flu complications this year. The Yakima Health District also announced the county's third confirmed human case, involving another person exposed at a dairy who did not need hospital treatment. Officials said 33 dairy herds in the county had tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza since early October. Officials stressed that the risk to the general public remains low and that person-to-person spread has never been recorded in the US. The CDC has recorded 72 US cases since 2024.
