Whakaari/White Island, the volcano off New Zealand's Bay of Plenty coast, has been giving off plumes of steam and gas for six days, according to the monitoring agency GeoNet, RNZ reports.
Satellite images show the discharges have been intermittent and carried small amounts of volcanic ash. Volcanologist Michael Rosenberg warned that activity could escalate with little or no warning and that sudden explosive events could affect the main crater floor. The alert level remains at 2, meaning moderate to heightened unrest, and the aviation colour code is yellow. Small eruptions in March this year and in November 2025 disrupted flights. An eruption in December 2019 killed 22 people and seriously injured 25 who were visiting the island.
