Zimbabwe's police say a nationwide operation against livestock theft has led to 5,780 arrests, AllAfrica reports.
The operation, named Stock Thief Hot Pursuit, began on 1 October. By 14 October it had produced 86 arrests for stock theft itself and 5,694 for related offences, according to police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi. Harare accounted for the most arrests, at 1,860, followed by Mashonaland West and Mashonaland Central.
Officers recovered 117 cattle, 31 goats and 23 donkeys, along with more than 1.5 tonnes of beef and smaller amounts of other meat. Most of those detained paid deposit fines, while 56 people were taken to court and 25 held in custody.
Police reminded the public that moving cattle and other livestock at night is banned and asked people to report suspicious movements.
