Mustapha Lamido, a son of former Jigawa State governor Sule Lamido, has told the Federal High Court in Abuja that the bribery and money laundering charges against him, his father and others are untrue, Premium Times reports. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is prosecuting the former governor, his sons Aminu and Mustapha, and several others and companies on 37 counts involving N1.35 billion.
The commission alleges that Sule Lamido abused his office between 2007 and 2015 by receiving kickbacks through companies linked to his family from firms awarded state contracts. Giving evidence as a defence witness, Mustapha said sub-contracts from Dantata and Sawoe Construction to supply bitumen, diesel and other goods were genuine, fully executed and won without his father's involvement. All the defendants have pleaded not guilty.
