Police in Katsina State, northern Nigeria, say four people are in custody and a toddler has been found safe after an investigation into ransom kidnappings of young children, Premium Times reports.
According to a police statement, two abductions were reported in early October. In the first, the kidnappers dropped a ₦5m demand and accepted ₦20,000 before releasing a four-year-old. The money passed through point-of-sale agents, which led detectives to arrest two operators and then a 16-year-old caught trying to collect a payment.
Police say the teenager led them to a hideout where the second child was found unharmed, and a 20-year-old accused of guarding him was arrested. Two other suspects are still being sought. The state police commissioner urged payment agents to check customers' identities and report suspicious transactions.
