Health workers’ strike disrupts public hospitals in Nigeria’s Katsina State

·

A week-long warning strike by health workers in Katsina State, north-west Nigeria, has disrupted services at public hospitals, Premium Times reports. Few patients were seen in the surgical ward of the Turai Yar'Adua Maternal and Child Hospital in Katsina on Saturday, and relatives of patients urged the state government to intervene.

The strike was called by the Assembly of Health Professionals, which brings together unions for health workers, nurses and midwives, and allied health staff. Its chair, Ibrahim Balange, said a seven-day notice issued on 7 October ran out without agreement. The dispute dates back to 2024 and centres on allowances, the minimum wage and pay parity with health workers in federal service. He said a committee's recommendations from March 2025 have still not been implemented.
