The Democrat Mary Peltola is campaigning on the cost of living in her bid to unseat Republican Senator Dan Sullivan in Alaska at the 3 November midterms, The Guardian reports.
Peltola, an Alaska Native and former member of the US House who supports oil and gas and gun rights, has toured remote communities where high fuel prices linked to the Iran war have pushed some power bills to $1,500 a month. No Democrat has won the seat in nearly two decades.
Outside groups have spent tens of millions of dollars on the race, and Donald Trump held a rally for Sullivan in Wasilla last week. Sullivan has trailed in some recent polls and faces a similarly named Republican challenger on the ballot. Alaska's ranked-choice voting and slow counting mean the result may not be known for days.
