Hugging Face has released Carbon-X, an open-source AI model that lets users ask questions in plain language about DNA and how genetic changes affect gene activity and health, Wired reports. The model is small enough to run on a laptop.
It was developed with researchers at Zhongguancun Academy in China and the University of Naples Federico II in Italy, and trained on 300 billion tokens combining DNA sequences, English text and biological descriptions from a wide range of organisms. The team left out viruses to reduce the risk of misuse.
Lewis Tunstall, a senior research scientist at Hugging Face, said the tool is meant to help researchers design drugs and genetic therapies and could help patients understand their own genomes. Wired notes that Nvidia agreed in September to buy Hugging Face for nearly $13 billion.
