Buttigieg backs independent Seth Bodnar in Montana Senate race

·

Former US transport secretary Pete Buttigieg has endorsed Seth Bodnar, an independent, in Montana's Senate race instead of the Democratic nominee, Alani Bankhead, CBS News reports.

Bodnar, 47, is a retired Army Green Beret, a Rhodes scholar and until recently president of the University of Montana. He says he would not caucus with either party if elected. Buttigieg, seen as a possible 2028 presidential candidate, said the two did not agree on everything but praised Bodnar's record of service.

Montana usually votes Republican, and the seat opened when Senator Steve Daines decided not to run again shortly before the March filing deadline. The Republican candidate is Kurt Alme. Bankhead has faced calls to withdraw so that voters opposed to Alme are not split. President Trump held a rally in the state last week, and JD Vance is due next week.
