Cornwall Park in Auckland will start charging for parking in parts of the park from 1 December, RNZ reports, as its managers try to cope with growing crowds.
The Cornwall Park Trust said the first two hours will stay free. After that, drivers will pay NZ$5 an hour on weekdays, capped at NZ$35 a day, and NZ$2.50 an hour at weekends and on public holidays, capped at NZ$20. About 300 free all-day spaces will remain on Grand Drive and Bollard Avenue.
Chief executive Murray Reade said demand had kept rising, especially at weekends and during events, and visitors often struggled to find a space. He said around 70% of the park's two million annual visits last less than two hours. Money raised will go towards maintaining the park, which surrounds the One Tree Hill domain.
