America's federal public health agency, the CDC, has added a third measles death to its national dashboard but declined to say which state it occurred in, prompting experts to accuse the agency of becoming less transparent, The Guardian reports.
A health department spokesperson cited privacy laws. Legal scholars told the paper that naming a state would not identify an individual, and a former CDC chief medical officer said the agency had other systems that show where deaths happen. In September the CDC changed how it reports measles deaths without giving a clear reason.
The dashboard lists three deaths this year, although Pennsylvania alone has confirmed five and is investigating a sixth. Confirmed cases nationally rose by 8 per cent in a week to 4,410, nearly double last year's total.
