The Tibetan government in exile has asked South Africa to guarantee the safety of its representative and office in Pretoria after the premises were firebombed on 14 October, Daily Maverick reports.
Dhundup Gyalpo, the representative of the Office of Tibet and of the Dalai Lama, escaped unhurt by breaking his bedroom window, but the compound in Lyttelton Manor was badly damaged. It was the second arson attack on the office this year. The Central Tibetan Administration's cabinet, based in Dharamsala in India, called for a thorough and impartial investigation.
A spokesperson for South Africa's foreign ministry said police were obliged to deal with alleged crimes, but that he was not aware of any request through diplomatic channels. South Africa has no official diplomatic relations with the Tibetan administration.
