Hundreds of people marched to Parliament in Cape Town on Friday, World Food Day, to demand climate action and changes to South Africa's food system, Daily Maverick reports.
The march was organised by the Climate Justice Charter Movement and the South African Food Sovereignty Campaign, joined by groups including the Women on Farms Project. Protesters walked from Hanover Street in District Six to Parliament, where speeches were made and a memorandum was handed to parliamentary representatives.
According to the food sovereignty campaign's national coordinator, Qhawekazi Mahlalela, the demands include putting the country on a climate emergency footing, banning harmful pesticides, preparing for El Niño and adopting draft food sovereignty legislation and policy that activists developed between 2015 and 2024.
