A measles outbreak in Bangladesh has killed 1,147 people and infected more than 202,000 since March, according to a Reuters investigation reported by Premium Times.
Reuters found routine vaccination faltered in 2025, with first-dose coverage dropping to 90% and second-dose coverage to 86%, below the 95% the World Health Organization says is needed to stop outbreaks. In 2024 coverage had been estimated at 96% and 93%. The investigation linked the decline to disruption after the 2024 protests that ended Sheikh Hasina's rule, including health worker strikes and delayed vaccine orders.
An emergency campaign in April and May reached almost 20 million children, but Reuters found evidence that millions may have been missed. A further campaign aimed at 3.4 million children began in late September.
