One person has been shot dead near a mosque in Columbus, Ohio, CBS News reports, but police stressed that the mosque itself was not targeted and that the shooting was unconnected to it.
Officers were called at about 2.10pm on Monday to the 2200 block of Albert Avenue, north-east of downtown Columbus, where an event was being held at the mosque. The area also includes a cluster of two-storey apartment buildings. Sergeant James Fuqua of Columbus police said the shooting was not aimed at the building.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had earlier said on social media that its agents were responding to reports of a shooting at the mosque. CBS said the mosque and neighbourhood officials had not immediately replied to requests for further details.
