Anchorage School Board to pick interim superintendent from district staff

·

The Anchorage School Board will choose an interim superintendent from current district employees to lead Alaska's largest school district after Jharrett Bryantt leaves early next year, the Anchorage Daily News reports. Bryantt is due to become superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools in Virginia in February.

Board president Carl Jacobs said staff can apply until 30 October, with an appointment at the board's meeting on 2 or 17 November, and a permanent hire planned over the summer. The interim leader will have to win approval for a budget prepared by Bryantt's team, with a balanced budget due to the Anchorage Assembly before March. The district closed a $90 million deficit last year through deep cuts, and officials put this year's gap at about $9 million, depending on state energy relief funding.
