US Eighth Army in South Korea must be ready for missions beyond the peninsula, commander says

·

American soldiers stationed in South Korea need to be ready to serve elsewhere if Washington orders it, the head of the US Eighth Army has told the South China Morning Post. Lieutenant General Joe Hilbert said in emailed answers that looking only at dangers on the Korean peninsula would be a mistake.

He said meeting US treaty obligations to defend South Korea remained his command's main task, but argued that its base in Korea did not restrict the kinds of operations it could take on. Hilbert called the Eighth Army part of a global force and cited its joint training with other countries around the Asia-Pacific region. The remarks come as the US urges Seoul to shoulder a larger share of its own defence.
