President Donald Trump has announced a programme to pay people who report fraud against the federal government, saying he personally will decide who receives money, CBS News reports. Speaking in the Oval Office alongside Vice President JD Vance, who leads the administration's fraud task force, Trump said whistleblowers could receive 1% of the fraud they report, with no upper limit and no need for criminal charges.
That differs from the programme's website, which says payments of up to $30,000 depend on a report leading to charges. Reports will go to the Treasury, and the Justice Department will run the scheme. The first payment, a $10,000 cheque, went to YouTuber Nick Shirley over a video alleging fraud at Minnesota childcare centres. Whistleblower Aid's president said Trump seemed more interested in pursuing whistleblowers.
