Ontario gives Hamilton $390,000 for tariff response team as Stelco layoffs loom

·

Ontario is giving the City of Hamilton $390,000 towards a $588,000 team to help businesses hit by US tariffs, particularly in steel and manufacturing, CBC News reports. Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli announced the money at Hamilton city hall, saying steelworkers were under direct attack.

Mayor Andrea Horwath said the team, due to be assembled this quarter, would help firms reach government support and find new markets. Hundreds of layoffs are expected after Stelco said it would idle part of its Hamilton plant, and she called the record quarterly results of its US owner, Cleveland-Cliffs, a slap in the face to workers. Fedeli did not rule out nationalising Stelco, as the NDP has proposed. Federal Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said options included forcing a sale or financial penalties.
