Air China adds extra flight to bring stranded passengers out of Cuba

·

Air China has laid on an extra flight to carry passengers stranded in Cuba after repeated cancellations on its Havana route, the South China Morning Post reports, with Cuba's energy crisis worsening under a US oil embargo.

The Chinese embassy said in a notice on Sunday that the additional service, CA590, was intended for travellers booked on regular CA866 flights that had been cancelled before 10 October. It was scheduled to leave at 10.30pm local time on Monday with limited seats, and the embassy urged those affected to take it.

The twice-weekly service, which links Beijing with Havana via Madrid, is one of Cuba's few remaining direct air connections to Europe. The embassy had warned earlier this month that the route faced frequent timetable changes and temporary cancellations for technical reasons, without explaining further.
