Honduras checks papers of Chinese shop staff and state builder’s workers

·

Honduran migration officials have summoned or put under review 41 Chinese nationals after inspections at shops in the capital and at a hospital construction site run by a Chinese state-owned contractor, the South China Morning Post reports.

Teams from the National Migration Institute, working alongside police and intelligence officers, questioned 86 Chinese citizens at 54 shops in Comayagüela, the twin city of Tegucigalpa and its main commercial district. Of those, 25 were told to come back for further document checks. In Choluteca, in the south, officials found that 16 of the 128 Chinese workers building a regional hospital for SFECO Group had irregular status.

The institute has not said what was wrong with their papers or whether anyone will be deported. The SCMP says city authorities are also threatening closures, and notes that the Honduran president has yet to act on a pledge concerning Taiwan.
