Opposition parties demand emergency sitting over Nova Scotia AI data centre plan

·

Nova Scotia's two opposition parties want the provincial legislature recalled for an emergency debate on a planned large AI data centre in Cape Breton, saying the project lacks consultation and safeguards, Global News reports.

Energy company EverWind announced on Friday a $10bn private investment in a data centre campus at its Point Tupper site near Port Hawkesbury, and AI company Anthropic confirmed it had signed a long-term lease. Official Opposition leader Claudia Chender told Premier Tim Houston the project should be regulated in the legislature, and Liberal MLA Becky Druhan backed her call.

Houston said the project would go through a process with strict checks. EverWind plans to start with 95 megawatts in late 2027, rising to 420 megawatts, and says it will pay the grid costs so they are not passed on to customers. Some local residents want the project paused.
