Guadalajara water protest turns violent as masked group attacks Jalisco Congress

·

A march by about 10,000 people in Guadalajara over contaminated water supplies was marred on Sunday when a masked group looted shops and threw petrol bombs at the Jalisco state Congress building, Mexico News Daily reports.

Marchers said the vandals were not part of the protest. Some accused the Citizens' Movement party, which governs the state, of sending agitators to discredit it, while others blamed the national ruling party, Morena. Organisers delayed the start by two hours to remove suspected troublemakers, and La Jornada reported that residents drove out at least 30 masked people beforehand.

The state government said at least six businesses were damaged, five people were arrested and eight needed medical help. Protesters in the main square called for Governor Pablo Lemus to resign. A week earlier, police used pepper spray and water cannon on the first big march, for which Lemus later apologised.
