Female Victorian MPs describe violent threats as state election nears

·

Women MPs across Victoria say they are facing sexualised and violent threats in the run-up to next month's state election, The Guardian Australia reports.

Upper house MP Georgie Purcell said she received hostile comments, including one saying she should be scared, after posting support for the federal independent Helen Haines, who was allegedly attacked by a constituent this week. Purcell said police could not act because the threats were not specific enough, leaving her on high alert ahead of 10 days of pre-polling.

The Nationals MP Annabelle Cleeland told ABC Radio Melbourne she shares her live location with family and staff while travelling her large rural electorate. MPs from across the political spectrum, mostly women, said threats grew during Victoria's long Covid lockdowns and have not eased since.
