Major US banks are detecting third-party AI agents operating inside customers' online accounts without the banks' approval, according to an Axios report covered by CBS News.
In many cases customers have handed their login details to personal AI agents, which breaches bank terms of service. Axios reporter Madison Mills told CBS News that her team also found signs of agents taking actions customers had not approved, such as calling a bank with a complaint. She said the agents were not hacking accounts or draining funds.
White House AI adviser David Sacks said on X that there was a world of difference between user-authorised agents, naming Muse, Instinct and Grokbot, and rogue agents that could amount to cyberattacks. He said sharing credentials might break bank rules but was not an attack, and suggested banks could give agents read-only access if they wanted to limit them.
