Canada's federal government is preparing to publish its first new national security strategy in more than two decades, according to a senior adviser to Prime Minister Mark Carney, Global News reports.
David Morrison, Carney's senior diplomatic and international affairs adviser, told a Commons committee on public safety this week that he hoped the strategy would be made public within a few weeks. He said it would aim to strengthen Canada's defences against a range of threats.
A Privy Council Office spokesperson, Mélany Gauvin, said the strategy would put greater emphasis on economic security. The last complete national security policy, Securing an Open Society, was released in 2004 under Paul Martin's Liberal government. Two years ago, Justin Trudeau directed officials to deliver a renewed strategy in 2025.
