Rescuers are digging through rubble in Nairobi after a multistorey building under construction collapsed on a busy commercial street in the Eastleigh area on Friday, with many people feared trapped, Al Jazeera reports.
The building came down at about 1pm local time. Police chief Issa Mohamud said more than ten upper floors were being built, while shops including an electronics store, a butcher's and a grocer's were operating on the ground floor. One injured woman was rescued, and police warned of a possible second collapse because the structure was leaning on a neighbouring building.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja said the building had planning approval but no occupation certificate, so the shops were trading illegally, and that one or two people may have died. Kenya's building inspectorate found last year that 87% of audited buildings failed standards or lacked approvals.
