Pope Leo XIV has called off a visit to Assisi planned for 27 October after his doctors advised against a helicopter flight so soon after his lung operation, MercoPress reports. It is the first engagement dropped since his 13 October operation.
A Vatican medical bulletin said a follow-up chest X-ray had confirmed an excellent recovery, but physicians judged it wise to avoid the flight as a precaution. In Assisi the Pope had been due to join a peace gathering marking 40 years since John Paul II's World Day of Prayer for Peace; he will send a message instead.
The 71-year-old had the lower lobe of his right lung removed at Rome's Gemelli hospital after a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma. The Vatican has said no further treatment is needed, and his tour of Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from 6 to 17 November is unchanged.
