More than 3,000 Palestinians have been forced from their homes in Hebron in the occupied West Bank as the Israeli army widens a military operation in the city, Al Jazeera reports.
Hebron's governor, Khaled Dudin, said on Monday that 488 families, totalling 3,171 people, had been displaced across the governorate, and the city's mayor said 3,043 of them were from Hebron itself. The Palestinian Prisoner's Society said at least 71 people had been detained over four days under a citywide lockdown, while homes, factories and roads have been demolished.
The crackdown began on Friday after two Israeli soldiers were killed in a shooting near the city, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged an operation unlike any since 1967. Human rights experts quoted by Al Jazeera described it as an effort to displace Palestinians permanently.
