Federal prosecutors have asked Washington state's top election official to set aside any ballots cast by 405 registered voters they believe are not US citizens, CBS News reports, days before the midterm elections.
The acting US attorney in Seattle, Neil Floyd, and Pete Serrano, the federal prosecutor for eastern Washington, said many of those on the list were thought to be green-card holders, who live in the US legally but cannot vote in federal elections. Floyd estimated that more than 1,500 illegal ballots had been cast over several elections. The list came from the Department of Homeland Security.
The prosecutors gave the secretary of state, Steve Hobbs, until Wednesday to respond and warned they could seek emergency relief. Hobbs confirmed receiving the letter but questioned the accuracy of the list, noting that one of the records dated from 1994.
