Jesús "Chuy" González Peñuelas, an alleged senior figure in the Guasave Cartel who is wanted in the United States, is believed to have been killed in a clash with Mexican Navy personnel in Sinaloa on Monday, Mexico News Daily reports.
The Navy Ministry said its personnel came under armed attack near Alfredo V. Bonfil in the municipality of Sinaloa and that two people died, whose identities may correspond to González and a man named as Cesáreo "N", reportedly his uncle. Forensic confirmation is still pending, though Security Minister Omar García Harfuch said available information indicated González was among the dead.
The navy described González, 56, as the cartel's second-in-command after Fausto Isidro Meza Flores. Four stolen vehicles and three rifles were seized in the operation.
