Juneau School Board declines parents’ request to review classroom behaviour programme

·

The Juneau School Board has decided to take no action on a request from parents for an independent review of a classroom management programme used at Kax̱dig̱oowu Héen Elementary School, KTOO reports.

Marc and Carolyn Lofgren complained to the school district in early October about the programme, called Acting Right and supplied by a company called Focus Five. They say its scripts use shame and exclusion, including dividing pupils into "strong" and "weak" groups, to manage behaviour. They told the board's meeting on Tuesday that their daughter developed nightmares, stomach aches and refused to go to school after a session with a consultant last year, when she was in kindergarten.

According to KTOO, the school offered the parents a chance to watch the consultant at work, which they declined. The family is now home-schooling their daughter, and say they respect teachers' professional judgement.
