Chancellor John Healey has said he does not expect the UK to rejoin the European Union in his lifetime, GB News reports, days after Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he wanted to see that happen.
Asked in a Channel 4 interview whether he shared Burnham's view, the 66-year-old Healey noted that he was older than the prime minister and said he did not expect to see it. He added that his job was to make the most of Britain's current position, and that both men wanted the best possible deal at the European summit on 20 November.
Burnham has said he will not propose changes in this Parliament or break Labour's manifesto red lines, but has argued the current deal is not good enough. He has told Cabinet ministers to observe collective responsibility when discussing Europe, after reports that 13 of them oppose rejoining.
