Alibaba’s Joe Tsai says open source is the only sustainable path for AI

·

Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai has argued that open-source development is the only viable way to build a sustainable AI industry, the South China Morning Post reports. He was speaking on Tuesday at the opening of the World Internet Conference's Wuzhen Summit in Zhejiang province, an event backed by China's internet regulator and the provincial government.

Tsai said only open source could make AI widely available, and that broad adoption was needed for an inclusive future built on the technology. He pointed to growing agreement among Chinese tech companies on open ecosystems at a time when rising demand for AI is colliding with shortages of computing power. The paper said the remarks come as Alibaba deepens its commitment to openly released AI models, despite pushback from the United States.
