Nigeria's New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the Independent National Electoral Commission and 45 legislators who it says defected after winning seats on its ticket in 2023, Premium Times reports. The lawmakers include members of the Kano State House of Assembly, the House of Representatives and the Senate, all elected for terms running to June 2027.
The party is asking the court to interpret and enforce constitutional rules on lawmakers who leave the party that sponsored their election. It argues they kept their seats after joining other parties without following proper procedures, and says some already appear on INEC's lists as other parties' candidates for the 2027 elections. The NNPP wrote to INEC on 19 October asking for an investigation.
