Western Australian Labor MP Jagadish Krishnan spent close to his entire backbench salary on electorate expenses in each of the past three years, according to expense reports cited by the Sydney Morning Herald. The Riverton MP outspent every other member of both houses each year by at least $120,000, the paper says.
In 2022-23 he claimed the full $78,000 allowance and spent a further $157,000 of his own money, mostly on community engagement and communications, when a backbencher earned $161,000. Spending above the allowance must be met by MPs personally. The figures add to scrutiny of Krishnan's finances after the paper reported last week that a New York businessman is suing him over an allegedly unpaid loan of about $1 million. Before politics he co-founded a network of GP clinics.
