President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he had agreed with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that the United States would stop providing about $4 billion a year in aid to Israel, with the money ending at the end of the year, NBC News reports. Speaking in a telephone interview with Fox News, he said Israel had become very successful and was content with the arrangement, but gave no further details.
A spokesman for Netanyahu said he was not aware of the remarks and would seek clarification. It was not immediately clear which funding Trump meant: a memorandum of understanding providing $3.8 billion a year in US military aid runs until 2028. Oil prices slipped after the comments, which came on midterm election day, with aid to Israel a divisive campaign issue.
