Members of a Serbian commission set up to audit the country's register of voters say the authorities obstructed their work ahead of elections later this month, Balkan Insight reports.
One commission member, Ognjen Rasuo, told the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network that the roll showed a rise in voter numbers that did not match demographic trends, at a time when Serbia's population is falling sharply. He also pointed to a considerable number of people registered at more than one address, and to cases where over 100 voters were listed at a single address.
The ruling Serbian Progressive Party faces its biggest challenge in 14 years in power, and there is growing concern about possible fraud, from intimidation and vote-buying to manipulation of the roll. Serbia has faced calls for years to carry out a proper audit.
