Helen Haines, the independent federal MP for Indi, was injured on Monday afternoon when she was struck by a car outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, regional Victoria, SBS News reports.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said a suspect was in custody and that Ms Haines had allegedly been attacked, but said it was too early to talk about a motive. He said a joint counterterrorism team had been activated and that he had been briefed by Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett.
The incident happened shortly before 4pm. Ms Haines's family said she was receiving medical care, thanked bystanders, health workers and police for their help, and asked for privacy. She has represented Indi since 2019.
