A correctional officer who assessed Kerrie Struhs on her release from jail in December 2021 had no access to her offending history, an inquest in Brisbane heard on Monday, The Guardian reports.
Kerrie Struhs had been jailed for child neglect after failing to take her daughter Elizabeth to hospital for type 1 diabetes in 2019. When she was released on parole, a parole intake officer marked her as posing no immediate risk to others. The inquest heard that police and court records about her offence were unavailable because of an administrative error.
Elizabeth, eight, died of diabetic ketoacidosis 22 days later at the family home in Toowoomba, Queensland, after her father stopped her insulin. A senior officer told the court Struhs should have been referred to the serious offenders unit, which would have meant closer oversight.
