Indie game developers hold back demos over fears of fast AI-made clones

·

Some independent game developers are becoming wary of showing early versions of their work because AI coding tools make it quick to copy game ideas, Ars Technica reports.

The studio Alliance Arts postponed a public demo of its game Drunken Goddess Reflex that had been due for Steam Next Fest, saying it feared the content could be imitated with AI tools and released before its own launch. It now plans to show the demo only in closed sessions under agreed rules.

The report cites earlier cases, including developer Freya Holmér, who found several AI-assisted copies of a rotating puzzle game prototype soon after sharing a video of it in March. Papers, Please creator Lucas Pope has also said he now avoids discussing work in progress.
