Chile's security minister, Martín Arrau, has said the government wants to replace the remaining sentences of some foreign prisoners with expulsion and to build at least one modular jail, as prisons designed for 40,000 people hold about 66,000, The Rio Times reports.
Speaking on Sunday on TVN, Arrau said a bill in Congress would allow certain sentences to be commuted to expulsion, naming Bolivians serving short drug-trafficking terms who are close to release as the clearest cases. The bill has not yet passed.
He ruled out copying El Salvador's CECOT mega-prison. The new places would be used first for low-risk inmates with good behaviour, and details of the size, location and cost of the jails are expected after 1 January.
