Four Salvadoran soldiers missing after gang attack on UN-backed force in Haiti

·

International forces in Haiti are trying to locate four Salvadoran soldiers who went missing after gangs attacked their armoured vehicle with explosives on Sunday in Croix-des-Bouquets, north of Port-au-Prince, Al Jazeera reports.

The soldiers, aviation technicians serving with the UN-backed Gang Suppression Force, escaped the burning vehicle. El Salvador's armed forces said helicopters sent to find them came under fire and that heavy fighting had hampered rescue attempts by land and air. It is the first major attack on the force since it began operations in June.

No group has claimed responsibility, though the area is controlled by gangs including Kraze Barye and 400 Mawozo. The UN Security Council was due to discuss Haiti on Monday, as the country prepares for its first general election in more than a decade.
