New Zealand's free trade agreement with India has come into force, with 57 per cent of New Zealand's exports to India now free of tariffs, RNZ reports.
Trade and Investment Minister Todd McClay said goods including sheep meat, wool, coal and most forestry products now enter India tariff-free, and that share is due to rise to 82 per cent over time, with the next cuts from 1 January 2027. Wine exporters, who have faced tariffs of 150 per cent, will see these fall to 25 or 50 per cent over ten years.
McClay said talks began in March 2025 and concluded in nine months, which he described as a record for India on a comprehensive deal. He said the agreement would help exporters diversify at an uncertain time for the world economy.
