AI-made ‘slopaganda’ ads test YouTube, Instagram and X during US midterms

·

Campaign adverts using AI-generated images and video, dubbed slopaganda, have been widespread during the US midterm campaign, putting pressure on platforms including YouTube, Instagram and X, CNBC reports. There is no federal law on the use or disclosure of AI in political adverts, and about 30 state laws set differing rules that candidates do not always follow.

The Wesleyan Media Project found more than $187 million spent on nearly 300 AI-generated or AI-enhanced ads, which it says is likely an undercount, with over 90 per cent of that spending from Republican candidates or groups. CNBC found several undisclosed examples, including a fake video of New York Governor Kathy Hochul posted by her Republican challenger. YouTube said it labels realistic AI content and requires disclosure in election ads, while X said advertisers were responsible for complying with the law.
