Peru's government has prolonged emergency rule at five prisons it considers high-risk for another 60 days from Thursday 5 November, The Rio Times reports. The decree, published in the official gazette on Tuesday, says order inside the prisons remains disturbed and keeps the National Police in charge of internal security, with the armed forces guarding the outer perimeters.
The measure covers Challapalca in Tacna, Cochamarca in Pasco, Miguel Castro Castro and Ancón I in Lima, and Trujillo Varones in La Libertad, along with a strip of up to 200 metres around each. The national prison agency, INPE, continues to run the jails and hold inmates. The decree says prisoners' rights to life, health, defence and due process are not affected, and police must report on the period within five working days of its end in early January.
