The US Senate race in Mississippi could take days to settle, with Democrat Scott Colom leading the Republican incumbent, Cindy Hyde-Smith, by just 65 votes, NBC News reports. Both campaigns say thousands of ballots are still outstanding, although the exact number is unclear.
According to state figures cited by the network, around 6,000 postal ballots had been sent out but not returned as of Monday. Those postmarked by election day can be counted if they arrive by 5pm on 10 November. An unknown number of provisional ballots, issued to voters without proper ID or missing from the register, also remain. Democratic lawyers and party staff have arrived in the state, and Colom, a local prosecutor, said his campaign was prepared to go to court. A win would be the Democrats' most unlikely gain in a night of victories in Republican-leaning states.
