OpenAI lobbying chief urges AI ‘New Deal’ ahead of 2028 US election

·

OpenAI's chief global affairs officer, Chris Lehane, has published an essay arguing that the 2028 US presidential election could be a turning point for artificial intelligence, TechCrunch reports. He likens AI's potential economic impact to the upheaval that led to Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal and calls on politicians to find a third path that lets Americans share in AI's benefits, setting out five priorities covering worker protections, education, safety and data centre construction.

The essay follows the Democrats' midterm victory, in which opposition to data centres became a bipartisan issue in several races. Kate Brennan of the AI Now Institute told TechCrunch the language marked a shift from OpenAI's earlier focus on faster development and lighter regulation, but said a private company invoking the New Deal to promote policies that benefit itself was misleading.
