Defence officials from China and the United States have agreed on the importance of practical measures to reduce the risk of military incidents between the two countries, the South China Morning Post reports. The talks in Washington were the first session of a new working group on preventing and communicating during crises, set up under an agreement announced when the two countries' leaders met in September.
According to a Pentagon readout released on Tuesday, the delegations discussed additional channels for managing crises and ways to communicate quickly and effectively. The Pentagon said it would continue discussions with the People's Liberation Army on key defence issues in the coming months, but gave no further details. The Pentagon referred to itself in the readout as the Department of War, and the paper described the talks as constructive.
